چکیده

Histopathological Diagnosis of Postweaning Multisystemic Wasting Syndrome

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a disease of pigs first recognised in North America in 1991 and subsequently reported worldwide that is caused by Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), a member of the family Circoviridae. The most consistent feature of PMWS is a generalized depletion of lymphocytes. Secondary infections with opportunistic organisms are common. There is evidence that ...

Role of IL-6 in Mycobacterium avium--associated immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome.

Immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) is a major adverse event of antiretroviral therapy in HIV infection, and paradoxically occurs as HIV viremia is suppressed and CD4 T cell numbers recover. IRIS reflects pathogenic immune responses against opportunistic infections acquired during the period of immunodeficiency, but little is understood about the mechanisms of inflammatory pathol...

Resistance to chronic wasting disease in transgenic mice expressing a naturally occurring allelic variant of deer prion protein.

Prion protein (PrP) is a required factor for susceptibility to transmissible spongiform encephalopathy or prion diseases. In transgenic mice, expression of prion protein (PrP) from another species often confers susceptibility to prion disease from that donor species. For example, expression of deer or elk PrP in transgenic mice has induced susceptibility to chronic wasting disease (CWD), the pr...

Abnormal prion protein in ectopic lymphoid tissue in a kidney of an asymptomatic white-tailed deer experimentally inoculated with the agent of chronic wasting disease.

Chronic wasting disease (CWD), a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) of deer and elk, is one of a group of fatal, neurologic diseases that affect several mammalian species, including human beings. Infection by the causative agent induces accumulations of an abnormal form of prion protein (PrPres) in nervous and lymphoid tissues. This report documents the presence of PrPres within ecto...

Macronutrient intake and malabsorption in HIV infection: a comparison with other malabsorptive states.

BACKGROUND Wasting is a major complication of HIV infection. The role of malabsorption in wasting is controversial. AIMS To assess oral intake and malabsorption in a cohort of weight losing HIV infected patients, with or without chronic diarrhoea. METHODS A prospective study using a predefined protocol for HIV infected patients was performed in a gastroenterology and nutrition unit in a uni...
